Spot the Difference: Meeting
Platforms and Virtual Workspaces

Joseph Gunner | December 10, 2021

Similar but different. Apples to oranges. Virtual workspaces to meeting platforms, you know the saying. However, as someone who does prefer apples, I will attempt the impossible and explain the differences between them, virtual workspaces and meeting platforms not apples and oranges.

Feel Less Isolated

Unless you’re a poor soul whose days are packed with back-to-back meetings, the gaps and comedown afterward can feel a bit unnatural. A day with just one or no meetings might leave you feeling isolated whilst you try to preoccupy yourself with your work. The feeling of isolation is bad for your employees’ mental health and if a regular occurrence, can lead that employee to become more reserved, less likely to collaborate with colleagues producing a worse work environment. In the virtual workplace, you are reminded that you’re working in a team and that you have support. Your employees are more willing to collaborate and add more value to the company than if they were on their own all day.

Virtual workplaces immediately make your business environment readable and more transparent. Knowing when your team rooms are too chilly lets you jump in and turn up the heat and get them working as a team. On Wurkr you can even see who is and who isn’t taking any breaks, remembering that it’s important to take breaks to retain focus.

See What Collaborations are Happening

It is important for a manager to know their team. A quick walk around the office and you’ll see the faces of everyone not hiding from you. Online management is more tricky, unless you’re annoying your employees with constant ‘check-ups’ then you’ll probably lose sight of who’s working on what and with who.

Flexible Workflow

Every meeting starts at XX:00 or XX:30 and gets dragged on till the next hour mark. However it doesn’t have to be this way, it’s not written anywhere, there’s no business bible that you have to abide by. Moving away from strictly scheduled workdays allows workers to fit more in around their day and make better use of their time. Rather than dawdling on their computer waiting seven minutes for the pre-arranged meeting time, teams can enter the meeting room when ready and begin as soon as everybody arrives, starting that presentation sooner. Instead of sending HR an email and waiting five business days for a response, take a second and step into the lion’s den yourself ask in person.
